Lettering or sculptural poetry

Using lettering in sculpture is nothing new. However, it is not that familiar to the modern audience who know, or think they know, what sculpture is (it’s 3D stupid), and know what lettering is (lettering, stupid) but find it hard to get their head around a combination of the two.

As a lettering artist I have been exploring this combination for many years and made a piece for the Sculpture by the Sea festival, held in Sydney’s Bondi each early summer, in 2004 – the year I arrived in Australia. It was modelled on this piece using slate, which is, I now feel, a much better piece than the 3 ton block of sandstone I made for the festival.
