These are a delight and trace an ancestry back to illuminated books. This example is taken from Handbook of Early Advertising Art, published in 1956 by Dover. Not exactly chosen at random – I love the sinister nature of the design and the fact that it is from Latvia, a country I know little, especially about its typography. Made in 1924 is all I can add.
