Helvetica stitched up

This from the Sydney Morning Herald of January 8-9, 2011. Apparently there is a six week course on how to cross-stitch Helvetica in Sydney. Go for it.

Lettering as calligraphy and Nicolete Gray

The post on Jean Larcher has drawn some good comment, ┬áso to satisfy the demand I add this from Nicolete Gray, of whom I shall have more to say in other posts during the rest of the week. This is another image from Letter Exchange. (I was once a member – please support their site.)

Slate lettering – Sculptural lettering

Another example of my sculptural lettering, this on green slate, about 30 by 30 cm. The text reads: Even the general took off his armour to look at the paeonies.

more 3D lettering

These were roughly cut from Pine and then hand finished. I forget when they were made, but probably in the mid 1990s. The box was Pine too.

Car logos/emblems

Just been watching Vertigo with James Stewart. Or rather the first 20 minutes or so. When Stewart is driving around San Francisco I couldn’t but help notice the ‘calligraphy’, for want of a better word, on his vehicle. I don’t know what car it was, someone hopefully can fill in the gaps, but there was plenty of bright metal work visible – the lettering on the bonnet (hood), as well as more flamboyant stuff along the side, especially at the rear. It would be fascinating to collate some of this typography which is so rarely, if ever, seen on contemporary vehicles. Anyhow, I just put this out there. If you have some images of lettering on cars please let me know. Mustangs?

Typography and the postage stamp

I do not collect postage stamps but for some reason or other (no doubt because of the lettering) I kept this one from a visit to France in the early 1990s. I came across it in my very infrequent Journal, in which I write now and again about stuff that interests me.

Anyhow, it might spark some interest somewhere, and lead to new discoveries. I am sure there are plenty.
